The purpose of this project was to apply business course knowledge that I learned at Western Washington University to a practical business project.  VECA Electric & Technologies was gracious enough to spend time with me and allowed me to collaborate with them to develop an accurate cost analysis of all electrical components needed to complete a new construction facility being built to operate a bicycle retail and assembly business; Transition Bike Shop.

Completing this project allowed me to develop valuable leadership skills within a practical business setting.

During my work on this project I applied many of the concepts, theories, and skills I attained in the business department at Western Washington University.   Skills such as self-motivation; I had to create a project plan with an outline of due dates in order for me to meet project deadlines.  During my work with VECA Electric & Technologies I soon realized that speaking and writing skills are essential in the business world;   I provided numerous written update memorandums to keep the project ongoing.   I also learned the importance of concise informal meetings and emails to keep the project moving ahead and avoiding miscommunications.

During this practicum I always made an effort to dress up for every meeting and be sure that my personal appearance was at the highest standard.  Both the Senior Project Manager and the Project Manager commented that it was refreshing to see a young person take such pride in their appearance.  I learned that proper dress attire and appearance is very important in making a good first impression.

In order for me to complete my assigned task for VECA Electric & Technologies I had to learn how to read an electrical blue print.  This is actually a very complex task, and I had to request help and direction from both the Project Manager and a senior electrician.  I learned that asking for help opens the door for answers and opportunities.  After receiving a crash course on electrical blue prints I was able to do a complete cost analysis on components such as outlets, fixtures, and communication wiring.  In order to research the cost of those items I had to learn how to use an internet based website to determine product wholesale costs.  The web site was called Platt.com.

During my practicum with VECA Electric & Technologies I was able to develop meaningful contacts with several individuals who may be able to help advance me in a career path.  Ryan Binning the Senior Project Manager and Jared Shank were very impressed with the work I performed, my overall appearance and my professionalism.  I have been invited to send an employment application to VECA Electric & Technologies.   Amazing!

I am certain I achieved the purpose of this practicum, which was to apply business course knowledge to an actual ongoing business project, and the knowledge I gained could not have been achieved in a class room setting.
